Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) announced on Tuesday that he will not seek re-election in 2024, joining 32 other House members who will not run for another term.

"I will be retiring from Congress at the end of my current term. This is not a decision I come to lightly, but I believe there is a season for everything, and — for me — this season has come to an end," McHenry said in a statement.

McHenry was a close ally of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and was chosen to serve as acting speaker when the California Republican was ousted in October.

He served in Congress for 20 years.

McHenry was an important part of the debt ceiling deal over the summer, which averted an impending government shutdown.

He said his decision had nothing to do with the chaos in the House in recent months and that he felt optimistic about the chamber's future.
