Impeachment trial of Ken Paxton begins in Texas

The impeachment trial of tje suspended attorney general of Texas, Ken Paxton, began in Austin on Tuesday in the modified Senate chamber of the Texas Capitol.

Paxton is accused of abusing the public trust and bribery and faced 16 counts of impeachment.

He allegedly got real estate developer Natin "Nate" Paul to renovate his house and give his mistress a $65,000-a-year job in exchange for special access to his office.

Paxton's lawyers claim that he has receipts showing he paid for the renovations to his home.

After the House committee voted unanimously to impeach Paxton, 60 Republicans and 61 Democrats in the state House voted to impeach him, with the overall vote being 121-23. A two-thirds majority is needed to convict him in the impeachment trial.

Paxton's wife Angela is a state senator and is required to be present at the trial but cannot vote in any of the proceedings.
