New House rules package would boost threshold for removing speaker
Just when you thought the situation surrounding current Speaker of the House Mike Johnson couldn't get any more interesting or complicated, America had a BOMB dropped on it regarding Congress' future.
The proposed House rules package that was released on Jan. 1 raises the threshold for removing the speaker of the House.
This is a HUGE decision considering the fact that Johnson was only hanging on by just a thread. Could this be the move he and Donald Trump need to make sure that Johnson retains the gavel?
According to Breitbart:
The House rules package raises the threshold to introduce the motion to vacate, a parliamentary procedure to remove the Speaker of the House. The new threshold requires that a member of the majority party -- in this case, Republicans -- and eight additional members of that same party sign onto the motion to vacate to remove the Speaker.
This is a drastic change that should help Mike Johnson's chances of remaining in place. Previously, only one House lawmaker was required to introduce the motion to vacate.
Rep. Jim McGovern, a Democrat from Massachusetts, did NOT agree with the rule change.
"Their proposed changes would, for the first time in American history, shield the Speaker from accountability to the entire chamber," McGovern said. "The American people did not vote for whatever the hell this is — and you better believe that Democrats will not let Republicans turn the House of Representatives into a rubber stamp for their extremist policies."
