House candidate Derek Tran declares victory despite leading by only 581 votes

According to the Orange County Register, California congressional candidate Derek Tran has declared victory in his House race despite the fact that his lead currently stands at only 581 votes.

The intense race for California's 45th congressional district might end up being the closest race in the country, so it's pretty bold for Tran to already declare himself the winner.

Votes are still being counted in the race that's too close to call, but Tran feels as though 581 votes is a big enough lead for him to say he defeated Rep. Michelle Steel, who was seeking her third term in office.

"This victory is a testament to the spirit and resilience of our community. As the son of Vietnamese refugees, I understand firsthand the journey and sacrifices many families in our district have made for a better life," Tran said, despite the Associated Press not calling the race.

Tran would achieve a milestone if he were to win by becoming America's "first Vietnamese American to represent the country’s largest Vietnamese community in Congress."

The fact that he's still begging for donation dollars to cover a possible recount means that the candidate might not actually be as confident as he's trying to appear.
