In stunning news out of the entertainment world, legendary actress Meryl Streep – through a representative – has confirmed that she and her husband, sculptor Don Gummer, separated over six years ago, as Vanity Fair reports.
Married back in 1978, the pair went on to have four children and five grandchildren, but according to a spokesperson for the actress, Streep and Gummer have been living separate lives for quite some time.
Despite no longer sharing their day-to-day comings and goings, Streep has not stopped wearing a wedding band, as was evident as recently as Friday during her appearance at the Princesa de Asturias Awards in Spain.
Notably, however, the last time the couple made a public appearance together was at the 2018 Academy Awards, as Fox News added.
A representative speaking on behalf of Streep confirmed the facts of the situation, saying, “Don Gummer and Meryl Street have been separated for more than six years, and while they will always care for each other, they have chosen lives apart.”
Though the news of the couple's long-ago separation came as a surprise to many, the writing may have subtly already been on the wall in recent years, by virtue of Streep and Gummer's high-dollar real estate transactions.
As Vanity Fair noted, after spending decades on the East Coast, in 2017, Streep purchased a residence in Pasadena, California.
Furthermore, in early 2020, the duo sold their penhouse in New York City's Tribeca after making dramatic price reductions when it sat on the market for more than a year.
Streep was once quoted as saying, “It sure isn't easy being married to an actress. But if you give each other space, you also get closeness.”
Given than she and her husband have been living apart for over six years, it appears that they have been giving one another all the space they could possibly need.
The news about the Streep-Gummer union comes close on the heels of a similar revelation from another showbusiness power couple.
Speaking recently to Hoda Kotb of NBC's Today, actress Jada Pinkett Smith told the world that she and her Oscar-winning husband, Will Smith, also separated – back in 2016 – and have lived separate lives since that time.
They also continued to present to the world an image of a happily married couple, giving no hint at what was going on behind closed doors, as Entertainment Weekly detailed.
As often turns out to be the case in tinsel town, the lives led by these celebrity pairs were actually worlds away from what they seemed, and the weight of the secrets they carried apparently became too much in the end.
