The town of Carmel, Maine, was rocked by the tragic death of its town manager who died saving his four-year-old son from drowning in an icy pond.

Kevin Howell was crossing a frozen section of a pond with his son early on Friday morning when they fell through the ice, according to the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office.

Howell got his son out of the water and sent him home to get help. The pond was located about a third of a mile from the family's home, and Kevin Howell's wife, Katie Howell, called 911 while rushing to the pond.

She ended up falling through the ice as well and was rescued by Penobscot County Sheriff Detective Jordan Norton.

Unfortunately, there was no sign of Kevin Howell, and his body wasn't found until that afternoon by divers with Maine's Fish and Wildlife Division who recovered Howell’s body.

This horrible tragedy has no doubt taken a toll on the town and those who knew Kevin.
