Hawley says Thune 'adamant' about supporting Trump agenda as Senate Majority Leader
While there had initially been speculation that new Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-SD) and President-elect Donald Trump did not get along, a number of Thune's colleagues in the Senate have now said that he is "adamant" about supporting the MAGA agenda going forward.
Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), who had endorsed Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) for the majority leader role, said that Thune was consistent in his support for Trump's agenda.
"I will just say that Sen. Thune said over and over and over and over in this long meeting that he was 100% behind President Trump — 100% behind his agenda," Hawley said.
Unlike outgoing Republican leader Mitch McConnell (KY), Thune has shown himself to be a leader who seeks consensus, several Senate colleagues said. Trump did not make a formal endorsement in the race for the role, though many of his closest allies supported Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL).
"I think it's very clear that this is going to be a conference for all of us. He's going to do this by consensus with us." Sen. Bill Haggerty (R-TN) said after the elections and meeting.
"His leadership is very different," Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) said. "I mean, Thune is someone that involves the conference before he makes a decision."
