Hans Modrow, the last leader of communist East Germany, died on Saturday at the age of 95.

Modrow rose to power shortly after the fall of the Berlin wall. During his time in leadership, opposition forces were finally allowed into the government and the push for unification was growing.

The Left party parliamentary group tweeted, "The entire peaceful course of establishing German unity was precisely a special achievement of his. That will remain his political legacy.”

Modrow was seen as a reformer and anti-establishment and as such contributed much to the reunification of Germany and its shift away from the collapsing Iron Curtain.

Reunification was achieved on October 3rd, 1990, meaning Modrow spent less than a year as Prime Minister of East Germany.

Modrow would continue to work in politics and served in the European Parliament for five years. His passing means yet another reminder that a terrible past for Germany is gone.
