Grace Napolitano, oldest House member, announces she will be retiring

 July 10, 2023

Representative Grace Napolitano (D-CA) announced on Saturday that she would not be seeking reelection and would retire when her current term ends.

In a statement announcing her retirement, Napolitano said, "I am incredibly grateful for the people of the San Gabriel Valley and the people of Southeastern Los Angeles County for the trust they have bestowed in me to represent them for a quarter century."

Napolitano is 86 years old which makes her the oldest member of the House by a month.

The lawmaker's long career saw her involved in many different legislative areas, both nationally and in her district.

One of her most notable accomplishments was founding the House Mental Health Caucus.

Regardless, her retirement is long overdue, and Napolitano is another example of why Congress is in desperate need of term limits.
