Amid continued criticism of the Biden administration's approach to immigration policy, a Republican congressional candidate in Virginia has issued a demand for Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas to resign, as Breitbart reports.
Cameron Hamilton, currently seeking election to the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia's 7th Congressional District, made the case regarding Mayorkas during a conversation with Breitbart News Saturday host Matthew Boyle.
Hamilton's position on Mayorkas is not borne out of simple partisan politics but rather his own first-hand experience with the impact of the policies DHS has implemented and overseen during President Joe Biden's tenure.
A former Navy SEAL, Hamilton was employed by DHS toward the end of former President Donald Trump's time in office and well into Biden's current term.
In that role, he oversaw several thousand Emergency Medical Technicians located across the country's southern border with Mexico.
In Hamilton's experienced estimation, the Biden years have been marked by a “regression” of the significant strides made by Trump to slow the influx of migrants into the United States, and he blamed the current president for rolling back many of his predecessor's highly effective strategies.
Speaking to Boyle over the weekend, Hamilton said that the situation now requires drastic action and change of leadership at DHS.
“What I'm asking for is for Secretary Mayorkas to resign because of his violation of public trust,” Hamilton declared.
Of particular value, according to Hamilton, was the “Remain-in-Mexico” policies instituted by Trump, which Biden – and by extension, Mayorkas – has unraveled.
Hamilton believes that as things presently stand, migrants continue to operate under the assumption that they will be welcomed with open arms by the Biden administration and are unlikely to face significant obstacles to entering and remaining in the U.S.
The Republican is working hard to unseat Democrat Rep. Abigail Spanberger in 2024, and he believes that his race could have broader implications for the country as a whole.
Hamilton characterized the Seventh District as a “bellwether” for national trends in that it is comprised of both urban and rural locales.
Among Hamilton's stated top priorities are things such as limited government and enhanced accountability, a balanced federal budget and national debt reduction.
Also emphasizing the need to get the border crisis under control, improve educational opportunities for America's youth, and to strengthen the military, Hamilton's platform is sure to appeal to many of the same Virginia voters who put Republican Glenn Youngkin in the governor's mansion, but the ultimate impact the call for Mayorkas' ouster may have on his electoral prospects, only time will tell.
