French President Emmanuel Macron suggest Europe distance itself from the United States

French President Emmanuel Macron has created a firestorm after suggesting that Europe “break away" from the United States to avoid conflicts “that are not their[s]." Macron seemed to be specifically referencing a hypothetical war between the U.S. and China over Taiwan.

Those comments were made to reporters after a visit Macron made to China suggesting that Beijing is successfully pressuring our allies to step away from our causes.

These comments incited a response from Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) who blasted Macron by saying, "We’re pretty heavily involved in Ukraine right now [and] we’re spending a lot of our taxpayer money on a European war, and I supported that because I think it’s in the national interests of the United States to be allies to our allies. [However] if, in fact, Macron speaks for all of Europe, and their position now is they’re not gonna pick sides between the U.S. and China over Taiwan; maybe we shouldn’t be picking sides either."

Rubio is an important figure in the Senate as he is the vice chairman of the Select Committee on Intelligence, and he isn't taking Macron's comments lightly.

Rubio continued by saying, “Maybe we should basically say we’re gonna focus on Taiwan and the threats China poses, and you guys handle Ukraine and Europe."

Macron may have overplayed his hand as his comments could very well cost Europe greatly. Of course, that wouldn't matter if China steps in and takes over the United States' role as the global superpower.
