Former Tennessee state Sen. Roy Herron died at age 69 over the weekend as a result of injuries from a jet ski crash on July 1.
Herron served his state for decades, first in the House and Senate, and then as the chair of the state Democratic Party. He was also a candidate for governor in 2010.
The former legislator's colleagues paid tribute to him on social media as the news of his death reached them.
"Saddened by the death of former colleague in Tennessee General Assembly, Roy Herron," Rep. Steve Cohen (D-TN) tweeted. "Roy succumbed to injuries from jet ski accident last weekend apparently caused by negligence of another. He was bright, diligent, and honest. A politician destined for greatness."
Tennessee Senate Minority Leader Raumesh Akbari said Herron was a "dedicated and joyful warrior for the causes he held dear."
Tennessee House Republican Caucus Chairman Jeremy Faison said he was a "true servant."
