Former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger died Wednesday at his home in Connecticut. He was 100 years old.

Kissinger officially served under two presidents -- Gerald Ford and Richard Nixon but was a trusted advisor to many more.

He was responsible for normalizing relations with China and reaching detente with the Soviet Union.

He was praised by his supporters and strongly opposed by his critics.

Kissinger was seen as influential even after he left his position, and he even met with Chinese dictator Xi Jinping in July, just months after he turned 100.

"The Chinese people never forget their old friends and Sino-U.S. relations will always be linked with the name of Henry Kissinger," Xi said at the time.
