Former royal butler says King Charles will hand throne to son in 10 years

Many have speculated when King Charles will be ready to hand over the reins to Prince William.

According to the New York Post, a former royal butler indicated that the king would be ready to abdicate the throne in 10 years to make way for his son's rise to royal power.

The Post noted:

Paul Burrell, who worked for Princess Diana for over 10 years until her sudden death in 1997, said that the monarch, 75, will be looking to give up the throne early to make way for William, 41, and his wife, Kate Middleton.

Burrell offered his take on why he believes the transfer of power will happen in a decade, noting that he believes King Charles has a "10-year plan."

"I think it will happen in this country. I think the king and queen have given this job 10 years, I think this is a 10-year plan," Burrell said.

The former butler added, "I don’t think he will want to continue being king when crowned heads of Europe have found that they can hand over to their heirs and see them become monarch and enjoy it."

He added that he believes the queen would have taken a much different approach, given that she's from a different generation.

"The queen would never have done that because she came from a different generation, her entire life was molded around being a monarch. But the king will know exactly what to do and take a page out of Prince Philip’s book and say, ‘I’ve done enough’ and want to do things he wants to do," Burrell said.

He ultimately believes that Great Britain will accept the younger royals in charge.

"I think the country will embrace a new, young king and Queen and it will complete the circle that Diana’s son will be king," Burrell said.

Social media users reacted to the news, with many saying King Charles will be too old.

"Why does he think he will live another 10 yrs?" one X user wrote.

Another user wrote, "He will be 90. Ha of course he will in ten years. That’s like me saying I’m going to eat breakfast in ten years. Ha. Love the internet."
