Police say that fog was the likely cause of a 35-car pileup on California's 1-5 west of Bakersfield on Saturday morning that killed two people and sent nine others to the hospital.

18 trucks and tractor-trailers were involved in the accident, and one of them was tipped partway over on its side, spewing its cargo on the highway.

Visibility was reportedly only about 10 feet when the accident took place.

The accident happened on the southbound side of the highway at about 7:30 a.m. local time.

The highway was closed for most of the day as cleanup took place.

California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
