Fetterman says he 'loves' Israel's Hezbollah pager explosions while progressives call for sanctions
Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) said he fully supported Israel's recent move to detonate 5,000 pagers provided to Hezbollah months earlier while progressives Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) called for a stop on arms sales to Israel.
"I want to be very clear, I thought what Israel chose to do about blowing up the pagers, walkie-talkies and then after targeting and eliminating membership and leadership of Hezbollah, I absolutely support that. In fact, if anything, I love it," Fetterman said on Meet the Press Sunday.
"And Israel demonstrated that they will not allow terrorists not to be held accountable, and I fully support that and it’s not about nothing, like what my colleague has said," Fetterman added, responding to comments by Sanders that Israel was moving the goalposts on a ceasefire of the war in Gaza aimed at Hamas.
Sanders introduced two joint resolutions to block further arms sales to Israel, but they are not likely to go anywhere in the current Congress, claiming that $20 billion in arms sales recently approved for Israel by President Joe Biden included some of the very systems used against Hezbollah.
Ocasio-Cortez wrung her hands about civilian casualties from the detonations, which happened on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"This attack clearly and unequivocally violates international humanitarian law and undermines U.S. efforts to prevent a wider conflict," she said, calling for a "full accounting" of the attack before Congress.
