Disgraced attorney Alex Murdaugh found guilty of double murder

March 2, 2023

The jury in former South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh's murder trial has found him to be guilty of the double murder of his wife and son in June of 2021.

The electrifying 6-week trial came to a decisive end after just a few hours of deliberation on the part of the jury on Thursday evening.

The jury found him guilty of two counts of murder and two counts of possession of a weapon in the commission of a violent crime.

Despite his best efforts to convince the jury that his murdered son Paul was being targeted for his involvement with a separate 2019 incident in which a 19-year-old girl died, the jury sided with the prosecution.

"This defendant … has fooled everyone, everyone, everyone who thought they were close to him,” said lead prosecutor Creighton Waters in his closing argument. "Everyone who thought they knew who he was, he’s fooled them all. He fooled Maggie and Paul, too, and they paid for it with their lives. Don’t let him fool you, too."

After weeks of testimony from over 70 witnesses, the details of Murdaugh's tangled web of deceit and shady dealings were revealed, and it didn't end well for him.

The sentencing hearing will take place Friday.
