DeSantis signs 6-week abortion ban with some exceptions

April 15, 2023

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a ban on abortions after six weeks gestation, around when a fetal heartbeat can usually be detected.

“We are proud to support life and family in the state of Florida,” DeSantis said in a statement. “I applaud the Legislature for passing the Heartbeat Protection Act that expands pro-life protections and provides additional resources for young mothers and families.”

The ban includes exceptions for rape, incest, human trafficking up to 15 weeks of pregnancy, to preserve the life of the mother, and for a fetal abnormality until the third trimester.

The bill also includes $25 million in funding for crisis pregnancy centers in the state.

These centers provide pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, and support services like clothing, furniture, and baby supplies.

Funding for maternal and infant health care and foster care services are also part of the budget proposal for the next fiscal year.
