Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) and former President Donald Trump have agreed on most of their policy prescriptions since DeSantis was elected governor in 2018, but the pair have split in recent days over Florida's newly passed six-week abortion ban.

Trump said in an interview with The Messenger on Monday, "If you look at what DeSantis did, a lot of people don't even know if he knew what he was doing. But he signed six weeks, and many people within the pro-life movement feel that that was too harsh."

DeSantis responded to Trump's comments during a Tuesday press conference, arguing that nearly all pro-life groups supported the ban.

"Protecting an unborn child when there’s a detectable heartbeat is something that almost 99% of pro-lifers support," DeSantis told reporters. "It’s something that other states like Iowa, under Gov. Kim Reynolds, have enacted."

Trump has said several times in recent weeks that some states' abortion restrictions were too extreme, a view that some Republicans voters also seem to hold.

When asked what kind of abortion restrictions he would support, Trump said, "I'm looking at all options."
