Democrats Resist GOP Funding Plan as Shutdown Looms

 September 17, 2025

As the threat of a government shutdown looms, Democratic leaders have taken a firm stand against a Republican-proposed stopgap spending bill.

Breitbart reported that house Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer have publicly opposed the bill, criticizing its shortcomings on healthcare and alleging undue influence from former President Donald Trump, while Republicans push to delay key health insurance issues.

On Tuesday, House Republican leaders released the text of a continuing resolution, a temporary funding measure aimed at preventing a government shutdown set for October 1.

Security Funding Amid Rising Political Tensions

The proposed bill includes tens of millions of dollars allocated for security assistance to lawmakers and federal officials.

This provision responds to growing concerns over political violence, particularly following the assassination of Turning Point USA founder Charlie Kirk.

If passed, the resolution would maintain government funding through November 21, providing a short-term solution to budget disputes.

GOP Pushes for Vote Despite Opposition

House leaders plan to bring the measure to a vote later this week, hoping to move forward despite resistance from Democrats.

Republican leaders are also aiming to pressure Schumer into negotiations to avoid the potential shutdown next month.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, representing Louisiana, expressed confidence in finding a resolution, stating, “We have until the end of December to figure all that out.”

Democratic Critique Focuses on Healthcare Gaps

Democrats, however, remain steadfast in their opposition, arguing that the Republican plan does not adequately serve the public’s needs.

In a joint statement, Jeffries and Schumer criticized the proposal, saying, “The House Republican-only spending bill fails to meet the needs of the American people and does nothing to stop the looming healthcare crisis.”

They further noted, “At a time when families are already being squeezed by higher costs, Republicans refuse to stop Americans from facing double-digit hikes in their health insurance premiums.”

Allegations of Partisan Influence in Bill

The Democratic leaders also pointed to political motivations behind the bill, stating, “By refusing to work with Democrats, Republicans are steering our country straight toward a shutdown.”

They added, “President Trump called the play last week when he told Congressional Republicans to jam a partisan spending bill down the throats of the American people without Democratic support.”

Concluding their critique, they said, “Instead of governing, Republicans are once again taking orders from Donald Trump, hurting the American people and recklessly marching our nation to the brink of a shutdown.”
