Democrats demand Supreme Court investigate Justice Clarence Thomas

 April 9, 2023

Sixteen Democrats from the House and Senate are demanding that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts open an investigation into Justice Clarence Thomas's luxury vacations that were allegedly funded by a Republican donor.

In a letter sent to the Supreme Court on Friday, Democrats demanded an investigation into "allegations of unethical, and potentially unlawful, conduct," on the part of Justice Thomas.

Justice Thomas has a close friendship with real estate developer Harlan Crow and often accompanied him on luxury vacations on his private jet and yacht. Democrats allege that those vacations should have been reported as gifts valued at as high as $500,000.

The letter read, "We believe that it is your duty as Chief Justice ‘to safeguard public faith in the judiciary,’ and that fulfilling that duty requires swift, thorough, independent and transparent investigation into these allegations."

Justice Thomas issued a response to the allegations saying, "Harlan and Kathy Crow are among our dearest friends, and we have been friends for over twenty-five years. As friends do, we have joined them on a number of family trips during the more than quarter century we have known them. Early in my tenure at the Court, I sought guidance from my colleagues and others in the judiciary and was advised that this sort of personal hospitality from close personal friends, who did not have business before the Court, was not reportable."

It's interesting how Democrats are worried about Justice Thomas's open relationships but seemingly unconcerned about the identity of the leaker who revealed the Supreme Court's decision on Roe v. Wade.
