Democrats are scrambling to replace Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow

 January 9, 2023

Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) created a flurry of chaos for Democrats when she announced on Thursday morning that she will not seek reelection.

Stabenow wants to make room for a "new generation" of Democrats, but that has created a situation where Democrats now need to defend a crucial seat while bringing in a new face.

Stabenow's announcement wasn't expected by Democrats either. One Democrat, Representative Debbie Dingell (D-MI) said that she was “stunned" by Stabenow's retirement and also mentioned that Stabenow had planned to run a few months ago.

Clearly, something changed for Stabenow and Democrats will have to look to new blood to win in 2024.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer (D) has announced that she will not seek the seat which seems appropriate considering she just was reelected as governor of the Great Lake state.

Democrats have no nationally recognized individuals that they could run, and this represents an unwelcome uncertainty in 2024. Republicans in Michigan could get to work and try and take advantage of this new opportunity.
