Denmark crowned a new king, Frederik X, on Sunday after his mother, Queen Margrethe II abdicated her throne at age 83.

The queen was the first ruler to voluntarily step down in more than 900 years.

Thousands of people lined the streets to celebrate the change, which is largely ceremonial as Denmark is run by a legislature and prime minister. They spontaneously sang the national anthem of Denmark to mark the occasion.

Frederik's wife, Queen Mary, was born in Australia and will be the first queen from that nation.

“My hope is to become a unifying king of tomorrow,” Frederik said. “It is a task I have approached all my life.”

“I want to return the trust I meet,” he said. “I need trust from my beloved wife, you, and that which is greater than us.”
