Former President Donald Trump's stranglehold on the Republican Party may not be as strong as once thought, with only 49% of GOP voters saying they want Trump to be the 2024 presidential candidate from their party.

Trump is still scoring highest with voters and has roughly double the support of the next highest candidate Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, who has 25%.

Sixteen percent of voters said they would vote for another candidate or not vote if Trump was the nominee, which is one metric in which he fares worse than President Joe Biden (8%).

While the numbers of strong Trump opposition are relatively small, they are a troubling trend for Trump as he thinks about getting into the race earlier than he did last time.

The New York Times/Siena College poll may not be among the most reliable, however, since it is a leftist outlet.
