A staffer for Representative Don Beyer (D-VA) was recently discovered to have troubling ties with the Chinese Embassy. Now, Beyer's challenger, Republican Karina Lipsman, is demanding that Beyer be investigated and removed from the House Ways and Means Committee.
Beyer's veteran aide and scheduler, Barbara Hamlett, was caught arranging meetings between staffers for other Congressmembers and Chinese embassy staff.
The situation was eerily similar to Representative Eric Swalwell's (D-CA) scandal involving an agent of the Chinese Communist Party. It seems that China has influence and connections with multiple members of Congress, and that should terrify Americans.
The connection between China and Beyer is particularly concerning as he sits on the House Ways and Means Committee.
Lipsman quickly issued a statement on the situation saying, "Don Beyer should be removed from the House Ways and Means Committee, which handles international trade and all free trade agreements, as well as the Joint Economic Committee. The extent of Beyer's office's ties to the Chinese government needs to be determined, so the level of national security risk can be determined. His office has clearly been compromised."
While it may be too soon to accuse Beyer himself of being compromised, it is clear that a full investigation must be conducted quickly. China's meddling in Congress must be confronted and shut down with extreme urgency.
