Dame Angela Lansbury, the actress most famous for playing the lead character in Murder She Wrote, died on Tuesday at age 96, according to a statement from her children.

Lansbury died "peacefully" in her sleep at her Los Angeles home, the statement said.

Her career began in 1942 with MGM Studios. Besides Murder She Wrote, she was also known for voicing Mrs. Potts in Disney's Beauty and the Beast.

She was one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood.

She was five days away from her 97th birthday.
