First Lady of Florida Casey DeSantis pushed back against accusations from California Governor Gavin Newsom (D) that her husband, Governor Ron DeSantis "bullied" the Special Olympics into dropping its COVID vaccine requirement in order to hold the games in Orlando.
“For those who need a reminder… this is why we fight. Isabella competed in the Special Olympics because @RonDeSantisFL stood up and fought for her and all the other Special Olympians who would have been sidelined. We will never stop fighting for people like Isabella,” Casey DeSantis tweeted, including a video of the athletes.
The governor said the rule was against state law, and recounted at least one occasion in which an athlete that sought a medical exemption was denied.
“This was important that we engaged in this. I wish it did not have to come to this. I wish this had been resolved earlier, but I do think that this is something that’s very, very important,” DeSantis said about the last minute reversal by the Special Olympics.
