Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) pointed out that his supposedly independent opponent Evan McMullin would only bolster Democrat power in the Senate, since he has been using Democrat donors and donation platforms.
Lee's campaign pointed out that McMullin has said as recently as October 16 that he would not caucus with Republicans even if it would give Democrats a majority.
There are already two independents in the Senate--Bernie Sanders (VT) and Angus King (ME) and they both caucus with the Democrats.
It's entirely reasonable to expect that McMullin would do the same.
In addition, McMullin does not have any experience with committees or other important positions, while Lee is a senior Republican on the Senate Republican Conference.
