Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a new naval doctrine calling out the United States for dominating the seas and vowing that Russia will counteract American dominance.
The new naval doctrine signed by Putin on Sunday declares that Russia will become a "great maritime navy" that will overcome the "strategic policy of the USA to dominate the world's oceans."
American naval power has been preeminent since the end of World War II, allowing us a critical advantage throughout the cold war. Neither Russia nor China has been able to match our naval capabilities, but that may soon change.
The doctrine continues to read, "Guided by this doctrine, the Russian Federation will firmly and resolutely defend its national interests in the world's oceans, and having sufficient maritime power will guarantee their security and protection."
Russia's primary interest is in the Arctic Ocean, but the ability to counter the United States in any theater appears to be the aim for Putin.
This new move by Putin comes as Russia fights an intense war in Ukraine and continually tests President Joe Biden. Russia is becoming more aggressive and something needs to be done quickly to ensure our naval power remains untouched.
