Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich called the January 6 hearings a "show trial in the Stalinist tradition.”
Gingrich made the comments on Fox News Monday night, noting that it is not customary to do anything like the hearings within 60 days of an election.
"There has never been a more blatant misuse of the Justice Department this close to an election," he said. "This is as close to a police state tactic as we have ever seen in this country."
Gingrich said that the committee was meeting with a Hollywood producer to plan the next two months of hearings and how to promote them and make them public, calling it "inappropriate."
"This is an absurdity, and Americans should be insulted," Gingrich declared. "These people think they are stupid enough to fall for this kind of thing.”
