Russia said Friday that it is willing to consider prisoner swaps for the release of Brittney Griner, an American WNBA player who was sentenced to 9 1/2 years in Russian prison after being caught bringing vape supplies with hashish oil into the country in violation of its laws.
“We are ready to discuss this topic, but within the framework of the channel that was agreed upon by Presidents Putin and Biden,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said.
“If the Americans decide to once again resort to public diplomacy… that is their business and I would even say that it is their problem," Lavrov continued.
President Joe Biden was reportedly willing to exchange a convicted Russian arms dealer for Griner and another Russian prisoner,
Griner pleaded guilty to the crime, but said she mistakenly packed the hashish oil in her hurry to get to the airport. Griner has a medical marijuana card that allows her to use the items in the U.S. legally due to a previous medical injury.
