House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) said that her visit to Taiwan with a congressional delegation was an “unequivocal statement that America stands” with the “island of resilience.”
Pelosi defied China's repeated warnings against coming to Taiwan, which China considers its province and the rest of the world views as sovereign.
“Our visit reiterates that America stands with Taiwan: a robust, vibrant democracy and our important partner in the Indo-Pacific,” she tweeted.
It is the first U.S. official delegation to visit the island since then-speaker Newt Gingrich did so in 1997.
Pelosi and the delegation visited other nations in the region as well.
