China is putting on a display to try to keep House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) from visiting Taiwan, but it is unclear whether or not it will work.
The U.S.'s main global rival said such a visit would violate its "One China" policy--that Taiwan is a province of China rather than a sovereign nation.
One top journalist even said that China should shoot down Pelosi's plane if she tries to travel to Taiwan.
“If she dares to go, wait and see!” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian told a reporter in warning.
“The Chinese People’s Liberation Army will not sit back,” Zhao told reporters, according to Chinese state media. “China will take resolute and strong countermeasures to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
