Suspicions that the Nord Stream pipelines that carried Russian oil to parts of Europe were deliberately sabotaged were confirmed by Denmark and Sweden in a letter to the United Nations.
The two nations observed “at least two detonations” of “several hundred kilos” of explosives just before the leaks began.
NATO is pretty sure that Russia sabotaged the pipelines in response to sanctions against it because of its invasion of Ukraine, but details of the occurrence are still emerging.
Gas is flowing out of the pipes into the water and the atmosphere and will continue to do so until Sunday, causing a hazard to passing ships and pollution to the waterway.
If seawater sits in the pipes for a long time, the $11 billion structure could become permanently unusable.
