James Caan, who starred in The Godfather and other movies around that time, died Wednesday at age 82.
The family posted about Caan's loss on his Twitter page, asking for privacy and ending with a phrase Caan often used in his posts, "End of tweet."
"Jimmy was one of the greatest," manager Matt Del Piano said in a statement. "Not only was he one of the best actors our business has ever seen, he was funny, loyal, caring and beloved. Our relationship was always friendship before business."
"I will miss him dearly and am proud to have worked with him all these years. My thoughts and prayers are with his entire family during this difficult time," Del Piano added.
Caan's cause of death was not given.
