Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R) told supporters at a campaign stop in The Villages over the weekend that he wants the media to "shoot at" him so they "don't hit you."

“They’re trying to stifle dissent. They’re trying to impose an orthodoxy on this country,” he said. “And in the state of Florida, you know, I’ve had to be the one standing out there and taking the arrows from the media, from the left, from some of the big corporations, but you know, that’s my job,” adding, “I let them shoot at me so that they don’t get you.”

The line drew wild applause, and showed his increased popularity since the election in 2018 when he only beat his Democrat opponent by half a percentage point.

He blasted the press, congressional Democrats, and corporations for their collective woke agenda and said that "leftist ideology" was one of the biggest threats facing the country right now.

"The stakes are high," DeSantis said.
