Republican Sens. Lindsey Graham (SC) and Ted Cruz (TX) are warning Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas that he could face impeachment for "gross dereliction of duty" in keeping the U.S. southern border if Republicans retake House and Senate majorities.
The senators sent a letter Wednesday to Mayorkas filled with detailed data on border crossings and drug seizures, which have risen dramatically since former President Donald Trump left office.
"Your failure to faithfully enforce this nation's immigration laws and willful blindness to the very real humanitarian crisis at our southern border amounts to a gross dereliction of duty and a violation of your oath of office," the senators wrote.
"Despite the heroic efforts by the men and women of Border Patrol, who operate with very little support from Washington, D.C., you have failed to achieve any semblance of operational control of the southern border," they added.
Mayorkas and President Joe Biden reversed nearly all of Trump's border policies when the administration began, and border crossings and drug seizures have climbed steadily ever since.
