Trump inauguration attendees will be sad to learn that while they were watching the swearing-in of our nation's 47th president, a Border Patrol agent stationed in Vermont was killed after he was shot during an encounter near the Canadian border.

Fox News reports that the agent was 44-year-old David Maland, according to a Customs and Border Protection source.

Maland passed away Monday afternoon about 20 miles south of the Canadian border, according to the Department of Homeland Security.

"A Border Patrol agent assigned to the US Border Patrol’s Swanton Sector was fatally shot in the line of duty," acting DHS Secretary Benjamine Huffman said. "Every single day, our Border Patrol agents put themselves in harm’s way so that Americans and our homeland are safe and secure."

A shootout commenced after a traffic stop, leaving Maland and one suspect dead.

The FBI reports that a second suspect was injured and has been taken into custody.
