Biden signs executive order limiting some illegal crossings, takes criticism from GOP and Democrats

 June 4, 2024

In the earlier days of his presidency, President Joe Biden and his administration, wrote off the chaotic and dangerous situation at the southern U.S. border as nothing more than a "challenge," refusing to call it a crisis.

Now that the next election is months away, Biden is pretending that the border is now a concern of his, and according to Fox News, signed an executive order Tuesday that's intended to crack down on illegal border crossings.

The elderly, cognitively challenged president, during his announcement of the executive order, had the audacity to blame "Republican obstruction" and essentially said it was up to him to address the border crisis, playing a bizarre hero card.

Biden probably expected Republican criticism of the measure, which many members of the GOP said was too little, too late, but Biden and his White House also took sharp incoming criticism from members of his own party, who blamed him for making it more difficult for certain illegal migrants to jump the border.

What's going on?

The executive order's language says that entry for regular illegal migrants will be capped after the number of entries hits a certain maximum.

Fox News explained:

Biden signed a proclamation that will temporarily suspend the entry of non-citizens across the southern border once the number of average border encounters exceeds 2,500 a day over seven days, officials said.

Should the border encounters hit the decided maximum number, the suspension of entries will hold for 14 days, until the number drops down to a seven-day average of no more than 1,500 encounters per day.

While that sounds good on paper, there's more to it that make the EO sort of worthless in the opinion of many, as there are multiple exceptions that will likely mean the numbers remain high.

Biden's EO on Tuesday was nothing more than a signature for a future talking point in an attempt to say in the debates and during his campaign that he actually did something about the border crisis. He'll leave out the part where he waited nearly four years to do it, and then when he did, it was a weak attempt, at best.

The president took intense backlash from both sides of the aisle in the wake of signing the order.

What critics are saying

Several Republican House leaders said the EO was "desperate political stunt to try and stabilize his plummeting poll numbers."

"This Executive action does nothing to end parole abuses or catch-and-release. It continues the administration’s abuse of the CBP One app. It does not reimplement President Trump’s successful Remain in Mexico policy. It provides no new resources for border patrol. It does nothing to deport the millions who have poured over our open border every year since Biden took office. And it will still allow scores of additional illegal immigrants to flood into our country before any so-called shutdown authority kicks in," the GOP leaders said, which included Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

Rep. Pramila Jayapal who is ranking member of the Judiciary subcommittee on immigration said Biden's EO was a "dangerous step in the wrong direction."

Clearly, Biden's EO is purely for political purposes. Only time will tell if it does him any good.
