President Joe Biden spoke about California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) at an opening reception for the Asian-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum on Wednesday, joking about the governor's potential presidential aspirations.
"I want to talk about Gov. Newsom," Biden said. "I want to thank him. He's been one hell of a governor, man. As a matter of fact, he can be anything he wants. He can have the job I'm looking for."
Newsom went to China last month, fueling reports that he was running a quiet "shadow campaign" parallel to Biden's.
The governor has been glad-handing all over APEC and hosted a high-priced fundraiser for Biden on Tuesday.
Biden was scheduled to meet with Chinese President-dictator Xi Jinping the same day to hash out how the two countries could return to military communications after the U.S. shot down a spy balloon over its coastal waters.
He had a full day of events planned for Thursday at the forum as well.
