Biden announces latest student debt relief program at a cost of $4.28B

 December 21, 2024

President Joe Biden, in his last, ultra-lame-duck month in the White House, is being awfully generous this holiday season between pardons and other hand-outs.

According to the New York Post, Biden signed off on handing out a staggering $4.28 billion in student debt relief for public service workers, continuing his crusade to wipe out loans encompassed by the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program.

The latest "you don't have to pay for college like everyone else did" handout will affect some 55,000 public service workers.

The Post noted:

The Education Department canceled the debt for student borrowers who have made more than 120 monthly payments as part of its Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, which incentivizes careers in public service — like teaching and law enforcement.

The president issued a statement when he signed off on the massive handout, touting his empathy for America's "middle class."

"From Day One of my Administration, I promised to make sure that higher education is a ticket to the middle class, not a barrier to opportunity," Biden said.

He added, "Because of our actions, millions of people across the country now have the breathing room to start businesses, save for retirement, and pursue life plans they had to put on hold because of the burden of student loan debt.”

Well, they might have "breathing room" for that stuff if they could afford gas, groceries, and utility bills, but that's a whole different story that he doesn't like to talk about.

Biden and White House lawyers have undoubtedly worked overtime to, as the Post put it, "skirt" around the U.S. Supreme Court's decision that shot down his largest student debt relief intentions, which involved a mind-blowing $430 billion in student loans.

After the Supreme Court shot down his initial plan, Biden held nothing back in saying that he would find a way to do the same thing in different ways, and apparently that's exactly what he and his administration are doing now as he eyes his final exit from the White House.

The Post noted:

The latest measure brings Biden’s student debt relief awards total to nearly $180 billion — a sum that congressional Republicans have claimed was an election-year “ploy” that was paid off by working-class Americans who never pursued higher education degrees.

Interestingly, the Biden-Harris administration withdrew another debt forgiveness program recently, which Sen. Bill Cassidy said proves that his promises were nothing more than an election bribe.

"With today’s latest withdrawal, they are admitting these schemes were nothing more than a dishonest attempt to buy votes by transferring debt onto taxpayers who never went to college or worked to pay off their loans," the Louisiana Republican said.
