The Bahamas may not be the safest place to go on a tropical vacation these days.

The U.S. embassy in the Bahamas said Friday that the island is unsafe for tourists after 18 people were murdered there in January, mostly as the result of gang violence.

The murders have happened in both tourist and non-tourist areas.

U.S. officials said that people should not physically resist if they are robbed there.

“Murders have occurred at all hours including in broad daylight on the streets,” a press release read.

Prime Minister Philip Brave Davis said last week that there will be roadblocks and covert police action in an attempt to contain the crisis.
