At least 65K federal employees take Trump's voluntary resignation offer

 February 8, 2025

Trump made a buyout offer to America's 2 million federal government employees, and a fair number of them have already agreed to take it.

The president knows that the federal government can't continue to spend as it has been, and one measure that could be taken is to cut the number of people employed by it.

Currently, roughly 2 million people are employed by America's federal government. The White House is hoping that between 100,000 and 200,000 accept Trump's offer to let them resign their roles but keep getting paid for months.

According to the Washington Examiner, over 65,000 federal employees have already accepted Trump's offer.

The new administration isn't framing this as forced resignation. Instead, officials are calling them "buyouts."

Trump's press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, recently said that the administration was hoping to get many current work-from-home employees to accept the buyout.

"They don’t want to come into the office. If they want to rip the American people off, then they’re welcome to take this buyout, and we’ll find highly qualified people to replace them," Leavitt said.
