Arrest warrant issued for impeached South Korean president
A South Korean court recently approved arrest warrants to detain impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol, according to Fox News.
In addition to the arrest warrant, authorities also received a warrant to search Yoon Suk Yeol's office and residence as part of a criminal investigation into Yoon Suk Yeol's martial law decree in December 2024.
Mr. Yoon declared martial law on Dec. 3, 2024, which put South Korea under military rule for the first time in 45 years. Although it lasted only six hours, the impact of the martial law decree is still being felt today.
According to the New York Times, the decree "threw South Korea’s democracy into chaos and drew public outrage, recalling the country’s painful history of military dictatorship decades ago."
As a result of the massively unpopular decree, Mr. Yoon was impeached on Dec. 14 by the National Assembly, making him only the third South Korean president to be suspended from power as a result of such a vote.
South Korea's Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials is leading a joint investigation into Yoon Suk Yeol.
The agency says that it is trying to determine whether Yoon's Dec. 3 declaration amounted to rebellion. Under South Korean law, the leader of a rebellion can face the death penalty or life imprisonment for their crimes.
