Angela Chao, in-law of Mitch McConnell, was intoxicated in drowning death at her ranch

In February, the death of Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell's sister-in-law rocked Washington D.C.

Reports indicated that she was involved in a nightmare scenario after she accidentally backed her vehicle into a pond, where she waited for emergency responders to rescue her before ultimately drowning.

According to the Daily Mail, according to toxicology reports released this week, Angela Chao was reportedly highly intoxicated at the time of her death -- over three times the legal limit in the state of Texas.

The tragedy unfolded at a lodge on her 900-acre ranch in Texas, where she spent an evening with friends.

As she pulled out of the lodge, authorities say she mistakenly placed the vehicle -- a Tesla SUV -- in reverse instead of drive, causing her to back into a pond, which began the process of her vehicle filling with water.

Chao was able to use her phone in her final moments, calling one of her close friends still at the lodge, alerting her of what had just happened.

Daily Mail noted:

The report from the Blanco County Sheriff’s Office details their frantic attempts to rescue her as she spoke on the phone to one of them, Amber Keinan, from her slowly sinking car.

‘Chao told Keinan the water was rising and she was going to die and said ‘I love you’,’ police discovered, ‘Chao then said her goodbyes to Keinan.’

Several of her friends attempted to rescue her after she made the phone call.

The outlet noted:

At 11.42pm she called Keinan to say she was trapped and spent eight minutes on the phone as friends ran to the scene with one paddling out on a kayak and another swimming to the vehicle and climbing on top.

Unfortunately, none of her friends were successful in reaching her under the water in her vehicle. It reportedly took 24 minutes for first responders to arrive to the remote ranch, but by then, it was too late. Emergency responders smashed a window out of the vehicle underwater and reportedly felt around until they felt her hand.

Emergency responders reportedly spent 43 minutes attempting to revive her, to no avail.

Chao was leaving the lodge after spending the weekend with seven of her closest female friends while her husband was reportedly away on a business trip.

Authorities said they would close the investigation into her drowning death "shortly."
