The United States military launched airstrikes in Syria over the weekend.

The strikes are in response to a drone strike by Iranian military forces.

Iran launched a strike that killed a United States contractor.

"At the direction of President Biden, I authorized U.S. Central Command forces to conduct precision airstrikes tonight in eastern Syria against facilities used by groups affiliated with Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC)," said Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III.

"The airstrikes were conducted in response to today’s attack as well as a series of recent attacks against Coalition forces in Syria by groups affiliated with the IRGC," Austin added.

"As President Biden has made clear, we will take all necessary measures to defend our people and will always respond at a time and place of our choosing," said Austin.

Austin continued, adding that no one is exempt from retaliation from the American defense system.

"No group will strike our troops with impunity," Austin said.

"Austin also said the strikes were conducted 'in response' to the drone attack and a series of other recent attacks against coalition forces in Syria by groups affiliated with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps," reports JustTheNews.

The United States has roughly 900 troops stationed in Syria.
