Canadian judge greenlights euthanasia for autistic woman

 March 28, 2024

A judge in Alberta, Canada, has made it possible for a 27-year-old woman with autism to be euthanized.

This is despite desperate pleas from the woman's own father, who claims that his girl is "healthy," just "vulnerable" because of her mental health problems.

The father and his daughter's identities have been hidden; for now the dad is publicly known as WV and his daughter is being called MV.

WV has said that his daughter's mental health issues are preventing her from making a coherent decision here, but the judge disagreed:

"MV's dignity and right to self-determination outweighs the important matters raised by WV and the harm that he will suffer in losing MV," Justice Colin Feasby wrote in his decision allowing the girl to kill herself.

"Though I find that WV has raised serious issues, I conclude that MV's autonomy and dignity interests outweigh competing considerations," Feasby added.

Who do you think is right here, the judge or the father?
