Lucia Sisic dies at 22 while holding Miss Austria crown

 September 8, 2026

The New York Post reports Lucia Sisic died at 22 while holding the Miss Austria crown, prompting tributes from pageant organizers and a fellow titleholder.

Mission Austria announced Sisic’s death in a social media post. The organization runs the Miss and Mister Austria competitions and had crowned her in 2024.

The cause, date and location of her death have not been disclosed. Sisic had written about serious health problems, but no official statement connected them to her death.

Sisic remained the reigning Miss Austria because the competition had not been held again since her 2024 victory, Austrian newspaper Die Presse reported.

Mission Austria said it learned of her passing with “great shock and deep sadness.” The response reflected the same focus on family and grief seen after the recent death of an Illinois girl.

Mission Austria remembers Sisic as a “wonderful young woman”

Mission Austria CEO Kerstin Rigger and her husband, Jörg, signed the organization’s statement. They offered condolences to those closest to Sisic.

“Lucia will be remembered as a wonderful young woman. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies go out to her family, friends, and all those close to her during this difficult time,”

Christopher Dengg, identified as Mister Austria 2024, told local outlet Oe24 that he was “deeply shocked.” He and Sisic held their titles during the same period.

“She was like a sister to me, especially during the time we held the [title] together. We will all miss her very much,”

His words gave the loss a personal dimension beyond the crown. Sisic was a colleague and close friend to those who shared the pageant stage with her.

Sisic had publicly thanked doctors for saving her life

Sisic discussed her medical history in an August 2024 Instagram post. She thanked pediatric heart specialists and other doctors who had treated her through repeated health crises.

Kronen Zeitung reported that Sisic underwent seven surgeries because of a heart condition. Her own message focused on gratitude for the care that allowed her to live a fulfilling life.

“Thanks to the specialists and the dedicated doctors, who have always saved my life with great efforts, I have overcome many difficult moments and have been able to live a fulfilling life,”

That history makes the lack of an official cause especially important. Her prior condition is part of her public record, but it should not become a substitute for facts her family has not released.

Public mourning often carries questions about dignity and remembrance, whether after one family’s loss or during major events such as the Ground Zero anniversary. In Sisic’s case, those closest to her have kept the focus on sympathy and memory.

A young woman’s death does not need speculation to carry weight. Her life, her gratitude and the grief of those who knew her deserve basic respect.
