Trump-named 'big beautiful bill' clears first hurdle in House

The House GOP passed a rule for a reconciliation bill with full support on Tuesday afternoon after President Donald Trump personally whipped votes on the House floor.

The bill gained support from all Republicans and passed 217-211, but a few in the party have already said they won't support the final bill in its current form.

The measure extends Trump's tax cuts from 2017 with a total price tag of $4.5 trillion as well as funding GOP and Trump priorities like border security and defense spending.

The House wants this one reconciliation bill to combine everything in Trump's agenda, while the Senate prefers to separate the tax cuts into a second bill to get a quick early win for Trump.

Trump prefers the House version, but he has some more work to do to convince holdouts like Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Victoria Spartz (R-IN).

Because of the House's narrow Republican majority, the bill cannot lose more than two Republican votes, or it won't pass.
