Republicans advance Trump budget nominee Russell Vought

 January 31, 2025

Despite a last-minute decision by Democrats to boycott the committee vote on Trump's nominee for White House budget director, Russell Vought, his nomination will advance to the Senate floor.

Democrats were protesting a funding freeze initiated by Donald Trump's administration, so Republican members of the Senate Budget Committee were left to unanimously vote to advance the nominee.

Vought is a hardline conservative, so Democrats were never going to be very supportive of him. However, they took it to the next level once Trump's administration announced a federal freeze on financial assistance.

The freeze caused liberals to call for a two-week delay in Vought's vote.

"Given the unlawful behavior of OMB this week, Senate Democrats will not move an inch to advance Mr. Vought’s nomination any further," Senator Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, a Democrat from New York, said in a press conference.

Vought's vote isn't the first time Democrats have taken action against Trump's nominees because of decisions made in the early days of the president's second term.

Nearly two dozen Democrats voted against Trump's Transportation secretary, Sean Duffy, just one day after he had cleared a test vote with unanimous approval.

It's clear that Democrats aren't trying to use their votes to make this country better, they're simply playing politics.
